INSTYLE – Can’t decide on your next travel destination? Bryce Dallas Howard recommends New Zealand. Thanks to her Jurassic World shooting schedule, which has taken her to the country for months at a time since the first film’s release in 2015, she has quickly moved from “tourist” to “semi-local.” When she’s not shooting alongside her Jurassic World co-star Chris Pratt (the sequel hits theaters in 2018), you can find her exploring New Zealand’s vast green hills, breathtaking oceans, and hip shops.
“New Zealand is this magical dreamland,” she tells InStyle. “It’s like a utopia where the people radiate kindness and the adventures of the natural world call to you.”
If that’s not enough to convince you, Howard, who’s now a brand ambassador for Tourism New Zealand, shares her top five secret spots to explore. Check them out below.
1. Paper Plane in Mount Maunganui
“I wish I could live in this store!” Howard says. “It’s the brick-and-mortar of one of New Zealand’s coolest online stores (paperplanestore.com). In essence, it’s a carefully curated collection of very stylish and beautiful products. If you are in the neighborhood and want to pile on a gluttony of cuteness, visit Sugar Town Cake Parlour, too. The name says it all.”
2. Commonsense Organics in Wellington
“In Wellington, I visit Commonplace Organics daily,” she tells us. “It’s your one-stop, ethical grocery shop. I felt like I was part of a community whenever I was in there, and marveled at the variety and selection. There are many New Zealand products I’m dying to export. Plus, its next door neighbor, Hot Yoga of New Zealand, complements Commonsense quite nicely.”
3. East Cape
“One of the most under-visited places in New Zealand is the East Cape,” she says. “It’s the first in the world to welcome the sunrise, which makes for a magical experience. Not many tourists visit since it’s a region off the beaten track, but it’s just as beautiful as the rest of the country.”
4. Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve
“The most incredible place to see stars and the Southern Lights in New Zealand is the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve,” she says. “It’s a breathtaking view of heaven.”
5. Hokitika Gorge
“If you want to see water that’s naturally the color of blue Gatorade, make your way to Hokitika Gorge,” she says. “These stunning glacial pools can be viewed from fun swing bridges and short trails built for exploring.”

Bryce Dallas Howard to Make Directorial Debut on ‘Sorta Like a Rock Star’ (EXCLUSIVE)
Bryce Dallas Howard is attached to make her directing debut on an adaptation of the Matthew Quick novel “Sorta Like a Rock Star,” sources tell Variety.
Howard has directed a handful of short films as well as an M-80 music video starring Lily Collins, but this would mark her full-length debut.
The film is currently in early development and without a distributor, but sources say if the film moves forward she would direct.
Originally set up at Fox Searchlight, the story follows an optimistic high school student, Amber Appleton, who secretly lives in her mom’s school bus during her senior year after an altercation at home.
Lee Stollman and Ellen Goldsmith-Vein of Gotham Group and Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen of Temple Hill will produce.
Ol Parker penned the most recent draft of the script.
Best known for her acting in films like “The Help” and “Jurassic World,” Howard, whose father is iconic director Ron Howard, has always had an interest in following in her father’s footsteps.
Her first short film, “When You Find Me,” was part of the Canon: Project Imagin8tion initiative that her father championed as help directors get their start. While it wasn’t nominated for an Oscar, it did make the Academy’s short list for the category.
Her other shorts include “Claudia Lewis,” “The Hug” and “Solemates.” She is repped by WME and Management 360.

The Help (Dreamworks) Film Summary: Based on one of the most talked about books in years and a #1 New York Times best-selling phenomenon, “The Help” stars Emma Stone (“Easy A”) as Skeeter, Academy Award®–nominated Viola Davis (“Doubt”) as Aibileen and Octavia Spencer as Minny—three very different, extraordinary women in Mississippi during the 1960s, who build an unlikely friendship around a secret writing project that breaks societal rules and puts them all at risk. From their improbable alliance a remarkable sisterhood emerges, instilling all of them with the courage to transcend the lines that define them, and the realization that sometimes those lines are made to be crossed—even if it means bringing everyone in town face-to-face with the changing times.
From bloodsucking evil vampiress to hateful bigot in 1960s Mississippi. Bryce Dallas Howard, who replaces Rachelle Lefevre as Victoria in the June 30 release of “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” has been cast as an antagonist in the Tate Taylor-directed adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s best-selling 2009 novel, “The Help.”
Deadline New York reports that Howard will take the role of Hilly Holbrook, a “beehive hairdo-wearing busybody” liked by few who channels that frustration into her own racist treatment of her African-American maids. Howard joins a cast that already features Viola Davis in the role of Aibileen and “Zombieland” star Emma Stone in the role of Skeeter.
The book on which the movie will be based unfolds from the perspectives of three different characters: Skeeter, a white woman who comes home after college to discover that the maid who helped raise her is gone; Aibileen, a middle-aged black maid mourning the recent loss of her only child; and Minny, a black maid whose attitude has not exactly earned her much support from past employers. Each of the three stories cross over with one another, painting a picture of family life and segregation in 1960s Jackson, Mississippi.
“The Help” is Stockett’s debut novel. A well-reviewed summer 2009 release, the author spent five years working on the book and was rejected by around 50 agents before it was picked up for release.
Howard had a strong 2009, with “Terminator Salvation” and the theatrical release of the Tennessee Williams-scripted “The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond.” Her 2010 will be even stronger, with the next “Twilight” movie out in June and planned releases for Clint Eastwood’s “Hereafter” and the Jonathan Levine-directed, Seth Rogen-starring project that was formerly titled “I’m With Cancer.”
